Mermaid’s Tears

Plastic pollution makes horrible waves in our oceans.

Plastic does not go away. It is easy to think that when we throw away plastic that it has vanished, but plastic does not disappear.

There  are 5 enormous patches of plastic in the oceans. They are called Gyres. One of the gyres is already twice as big as Texas or 6 x the size of the United Kingdom!

In the environment, plastic breaks down into very small pieces which get mistaken for food by the wildlife.

These tiny plastic pieces kill many birds and ocean animals.

Scientists call these tiny bits of plastic Mermaid’s Tears.

We need to do our best to do everything that we can to make the waves beautiful again and stop the Mermaid’s Tears.

Let’s Get Started !

You can make a difference by taking small steps to make changes that will help. Below is a list of things that make Mermaid’s Tears and a list that makes Mermaid’s Smiles.

Think where these are used at home and at school and see if you can start making changes that stop creating Mermaid Tears.

You could also use Paper-stemmed cotton buds instead of Plastic cotton buds to clean your ears.

Use Ceramic cups, paper cups or a glass instead of Plastic Throw-Away Cups to drink out of.

When you are offered a straw to drink from ask for a paper straw or have no straw - say no to Plastic Straws.

Together – lets stop making Mermaid’s Tears :)
